Can anyone answer questions about the police field?

Does anyone know anything about transferring into NJ after being a police officer in another state? My boyfriend is a Baltimore City police officer and we have been looking into getting him back into Jersey, but the Internet provides mixed information. I'm looking for information from someone who has heard of this process before and has experience.

Any information is greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Contact the NJ Police Training Commission.
http://www.state.nj.us/lps/dcj/njptc/waivers.htm

He will have to start looking for departments hiring in the area he wants to work in and get hired before being able to be waived. It is very tough to receive an out of state waiver but not impossible. The testing process here is the same as out of state for the most part. Start Applying.

If he follows the PTC guidelines he will have to do a mini academy on nj laws. But why would you want him to come here. This state is not police friendly. Have you heard of the guy running the state. Hates cops, firemen and teachers.

LFA was asking for some advice here, why did you have to inject your snide comments. Are you some public union member who has been feeding at the public teat and perhaps had your never ending gravy train derailed?

Thank you for the information. And I'm going to ignore the political comment. Sure our state has some issues, but he is in a very dangerous area now and our being able to be together right now is more important than anything else. Though I shouldn't have to explain my inquiring to refute a snide comment.

It s was not meant to be a snide comment and the fact is that he does not care for any one in public employment. Baltimore is not a great place but as we saw in Jersey City, neither is New Jersey. And xtownie I have no worries about my gravy train because I don't have one. The people in the police pension are Required by law to be in it. Unlike the state which is required to make payments but doesn't, some people don't get the choice to skip payments. This officer is lookin to come here to be with his girlfriend. That is admirable. But he needs to know the climate he is coming to. Xtownie is a prime example of what he will face from the public and politicians.

In NJ some departments hire from the State Civil Service Commision and some towns give what they call a Chief's test.
His best route would be with out a NJ address:
He can check out NJ lawman. http://forums.njlawman.com/?forum=4499 this is the forum where people can talk about up coming tests.
Also the NJ chief of police association has a site where they list the test dates. http://www.njsacop.org/content.asp?pl=17&contentid=42.

He will still have to take a written test. If he passes then he will move on to the Physical agility test. If passed then the interview process will start. If he moves on then the Psyc Evaluation and a physical is needed. Then usually you are in the door.

Most chief tests post the requirements such as education and military service on the department web sites along with the fee to take the test.
It would be a waist of time to take the Civil service test without a NJ address. A lot of that depends on where you live and there is a Veteran's preference. A lot of Civil service towns keep looking for lateral transfers from other departments.

Best of luck

Roxbury is hiring along with some other departments out of the area:

I really appreciate all the information. The standard internet searches I've done have been confusing and you've all spelled things out very clearly. Thank you.
