Very cool. Thanks for posting this link. I wish it went back further than 1950 though.

I must be doing something wrong because I am not getting the song to play.
Where is the speaker you are suppose to click on?
Thanks for anyone's help on this. I am using an I Pad and maybe there is something different I need to do besides turning the volume up...

Just click on the record label and the song starts playing in a new window.

Thank you Greg! I was clicking on the title and a picture of the singer came up, but no music.

I suppose it's only fitting that "Theme from Shaft" was number one during the month I was born, lol.

Imagine from John Lennon was the only song out of the 10 on the list that was any good, IMO.

Cher, Rod Stewart, Bread, the Chi-Lites, Cat Stevens, Michael Jackson and the Osmonds? No thanks...

If my 1971 memory serves correctly, the Cher song was Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves and the Cat Stevens song was Peace Train. Neither one was an all-time great or anything, but I enjoyed them.

Bread I never cared for, called them a weenie group.

Since we got on 1971, this song, although it wasn't a big hit, is fabulous in my opinion ... I show it to my students every semester. Words to live by.

In light of our recent discussion on depression and suicide ...

I'd be interested to hear what y'all think

Well, back on topic ... the number one song in the month I was born is Goodnight Irene by Gordon Jenkins and the Weavers. Number two is Mona Lisa by Nat "King" Cole.

Also in the top ten are songs by the Ames Brothers and Patti Page.

Phil Rizzuto was AL MVP the year I was born...holy cow ... makes me certifiably OLD.

Calico, I liked the Classics IV ... Spooky, Stormy, Every Day with You ... good songs.

Positive, I liked the New Vaudville Band ... Winchester Cathedral, you're bringing me down, you stood and you watched as my baby left town.

You coulda done something, but you didn't try.

You didn't do nothing, you let her walk by.

Now everyone knows just how much I needed that gal

She wouldn't have gone ... far away ... if only you had started ringing your bell.

(repeat)

A bodie a do, a bodie a do, a bodie a do, ba ba bop.

Calico

That may have been "Derek & the Dominos" aka Eric Clapton, Duane Allman & Band, possibly "Layla" or "Bell Bottom Blues":

Phil D. - Nah, it was Derek - Cinnamon. Which I'm not familiar with. Derek & the Dominos I know for sure. :-)

Man you make me feel old - LOL. I was in my Freshman year in HS when the "Theme From Shaft" came out and living in the Philly suburbs. I agree though about some of the music of the time, but then I was listening to WMMR and WSAN back in those days when they were cutting edge! Mahavishnu Orchestra never was huge, but those were the glory days for speed guitarist John McLaughlin. Of course I was listening to Led Zep, Stones, Uriah Heep, Sabbath, Jethro Tull ("Thick as a Brick" was one of the first albums I ever bought, along with Sabbath's "Black Sabbath", "Paranoid" & Master of Reality). Of course there was Lou Reed's "Transformer".

Funny thing is, I still have those albums and a few thousand more. Never was much of a singles buyer. Compared to your year at least, my month and year were Golden Oldies, but not as exciting as some of the stuff coming out during the time of your Birth year!

Calico

Oh Holy Moses, that's right THIS GUY!

Derek was one of his "pen names" (actually the real name of his younger brother).

As another song goes, he "wrote the songs", mostly for many others!

By the way - just for you:

I remember it. My Aunt & Uncle who were in HS at the time and were dance champs, used to teach all my cousins and I all the cool steps when we were visiting.

I believe that I have the "Shaft" soundtrack in my many boxes of albums somewhere. I was a Freshman in HS when it came out. Loved it too!

A better link to Cinnamon (by Johnny Cymbal, aka "Derek") is the one I posted up above for Calico, and again here:

Unfortunately, I've heard a number of songs posted by the poster that Andy linked to and while they do have a good number of songs, the quality isn't so great with a lot of echo, etc. since they're recording from in front of their jukebox.

Yeah, it's tough with those songs that pre-date the MTV Music Video era.

We used to hear them on AM radio, but the vinyl 45s sounded good.
