Snow 11/26/14
Weather nj says could be snow. Other news sources keeping an eye on a developing coastal storm.
I'm always up for a good snow storm, but NOT next week! We are traveling to Philly and my daughter is in the Thanksgiving Day parade. I'm praying for a warm spell!
Sorry Jersey girl. Wont be warm. Snow? That really sux! Lets hope it goes out to sea.
The Euro shows a major storm at this point. It hasn't been that great though over the last year or so.
oh jeez.... I'm driving to OH that day.... right now, it shows the weather turning to rain. Especially as you travel west....
Ugh!!! Waaayyyyy to early for snow.....hopefully this won't turn into anything especially since many will be travelling for the holiday.
This would be more of a rain to snow storm. But precip intensity can also be a factor on precip type.
JR I'll be traveling to OH that day as well. I guess it's a wait and see as to when and which way to go. Usually take 78 to Penn Pike.
I was just coming on here to ask Bryan his thoughts as my sister just sent me this:
(Their map shows the possibility of 8+ inches :/)
As posted by East Coast Weather Watch on FB:
STORM THREAT INCREASING FOR BUSY TRAVEL DAY INTO THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY:
Edited at 6:04pm: *The below image once again is what the European Model's latest run was depicting in inches across the area. This is NOT an amount call by ECWW*
Good Saturday Afternoon: Well if the mighty EUROPEAN model is right as of its latest run - areas within 15-20 miles of the I-95 corridor from Balt/Wash through NYC on north + west may be in for a pounding of SNOW from Wednesday afternoon the biggest travel day into early Thanksgiving Day. Beings we cannot post the actual European output, we can show you our interpretations from that model output. This is not our snow projections. Our concerns were there yesterday when the Euro showed first and had it again late last night and for the 3rd time in a row just a few hrs ago. The GFS has it still further east BUT has brought it back in closer to the coast than yesterdays run. I would say confidence has moved to 50-60% now that we are seeing the trend. The system is definitely stronger in todays runs of the models. That is key as the weaker the system the less the snow comes in to play because of the lack of real cold air. The stronger the storm the more likelihood the storm will manufacture its own colder air and really have a chance to wind up. So now it has our attention and with this being a holiday coming up we have to really hunker down and keep everyone updated on this potential winter storm. Stay tuned friends.
I go to SE Ohio, so I go 81S then cut across MD on 70W to 68W. Right thru the mountains...Cumberland.
No! No! No!
Driving to the Sands Resort/Casino in Bethlehem for EXODUS and SLAYER Wednesday! Hoping the thrash metal gods will be able to push this system east!
Nov '14
I hope we get pounded with a storm love snow :) also hoping I get to leave work early as I commute over an hour to teach
Today's euro has a heavy rain/mix scenario before possibly changing to heavy snow (mainly inland like NW NJ/Pocs/Catskills). Mostly rain with some mixing at the coast. Either way the euro really amps the storm up. It's not backing down so far.
oh boy here we go. I guess confidence is growing.

Thanks for the watching and the details Bryan, very appreciated. Whatever I was going to do on Wednesday gets done on Tuesday and that's that.
I am getting a feeling of deja vu though, where we had a storm last year 6-8" predicted and it deflated ... we'll find out!
My son and his 3 friends are going to the Exodus and Slayer concert as well. I thought they were the only people left in town that were into heavy metal like that! I am hoping for no snow so they have a safe trip.
I saw Slayer in '85, when their 1st full length album, Hell Awaits, came out. They were mere babies. Still have that album.
Thanks for your opinion Bryan- that being said- is it supposed to be worse snow-wise further east or west of 95? Trying to decide which way to go to Virginia.
The worst of the snow looks west of 95 but the farther south and west you go the lighter it gets at some point. Where will depend on the track. As far as here i don't think Weds looks that bad. Snow starts in the afternoon with temps above freezing. More towards evening is where it goes downhill, and it could go downhill very fast. BTW i'm still around. I dont' leave until this Sunday.
Oh man. Hoping it clears out by Thursday morning as I have to travel up towards Mt. Airy early in the AM.
Nov '14
I'm jealous Mr. Negative lol!
Mark4, while your hoping it clears out....I'm praying it never comes lol!
Heidi, I had no idea there was a Slayer/Exodus concert on Wednesday or I would be there as well. However, Hell Awaits was actually their second full-length album; Show No Mercy was the first, with notable tracks such as the title track, Die by the Sword, The Antichrist and Black Magic. There aren't a whole lot of die-hard female Slayer fans out there though... glad to have you aboard (-;
My first Slayer concert was Halloween night, 1988 at Stabler Arena, Lehigh University. Motörhead and Overkill were the opening acts. It was the South of Heaven (4th studio album) tour and we were all mere sophomores in high school at the time. It's still one of my top 3 shows of all time and I've been to at least a hundred since then.
The folks down at the NWS in Mt Holly have already posted a Winter Storm Watch for our area for Wednesday for a general 4-8 inches of snow. A bit unusual this many days out from the actual event but totally understandable with it expected to hit on the busiest travel day of the year:
http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=NJZ007&warncounty=NJC041&firewxzone=NJZ007&local_place1=Hope%20NJ&product1=Winter+Storm+Watch&lat=40.89595&lon=-74.96288#.VHLvdIvF-So
Great, I was planning on leaving from Kent, OH on Wednesday. Looks like I'll have to change my plans and leave tomorrow. Good thing I checked the weather for Hackettstown too!! For the posters driving to Ohio on Wednesday, we have a sunny day for most of the state in the forecast. Just bundle up because it'll be chilly.
Nov '14
I think we're pretty much on track here. Models are consistent though slightly different from each other. Take the ave and it's a good 4-8" snowfall. Snowfall amounts will rise as you head west and especially northwest.
yeah, the timing SUCKS. alot of Thanksgivings with families are going to be postponed or outright cancelled this year, if this storm happens. I would hope even the snow lovers can see that lol.
Me, I'm making my trip regardless, because I have to- it's a family reunion trip for me, and I'll be seeing immediate family I have seen only twice in the last 2 years, and won't see again for at least another 6 months. Old man winter and jack frost can suck it. There is no joy in THIS snow storm.
Bryan- how far west? Any idea where it lightens up as far as traveling west/southwest goes?
Family already canceling for Thursday. Cant blame them. I havent finished food shopping yet, so now I will just buy less. Saves me $ but rather have family here.
See, this is one reason I HATE SNOW! Bummer!!
iphone-imall - thanks for the clarification. I thought Hell Awaits was not a full length ep.
My son's friends were shocked when I told them that I had seen Slayer, Megadeth, Motorthead, Overkill, Anthrax etc. all when they were just starting out. When I showed them my old record collection you should have seen their faces!
Don't think they expected a 54 year old mom to even know who these bands are, haha!
only driving to Tenafly Thursday afternoon - I hope it's doable - I have to bring salad for a small and intimate group of 28..............yikes
After you dig out and the towns clear the roads, which may take awhile. Holiday OT for some. Cha ching!
"From what I have heard, Thanksgiving day should be fine for travel."
Yeah, but when it's an 8+ hour drive, you still won't make it in time for the traditionally-earlyish-Thanksgiving Dinner. Grrr.......
looks like we are going to adjust our plans and leave Tuesday night. Travel halfway to OH and stay in a hotel. Get far enough west to avoid the snow. Wednesday is usually a busy travel day on the roads and once you add snow it will be the worst day to travel. Need to get out of here earlier than deal with driving on that day
Wow, the GFS and Euro REALLY aren't agreeing on this one...... GFS shows nothing but maybe some rain, lol
(video)
http://www.weather.com/holiday/thanksgiving/news/thanksgiving-travel-forecast
JR - I meant for 5cat to get to Tenafly, Thanksgiving day should be fine.
We are heading out Wednesday as well. Going to a B&B lodge out in western PA. It's a little over 4 hours out. Plan on leaving by 10 am. I don't think it will be an issue going west at that hour.
I can't leave wednesday, and abandon the wife and dog to being snowed in.... I'll have to stay, drive on Thanksgiving, I guess....
BTW I can't imagine how packed the grocery stores will be today/tomorrow. Holiday food shoppers plus storm preppers. Shop Rite is going to be a mad house.
So true darwin. I'm so glad that I don't have to go anywhere near a grocery store this week.
Say it aint so - Bryan. Can I just say THANK YOU for your input. I was told about you several years ago and have relied on your forecast, exclusively, since then. You have provided an invaluable service. Good luck wherever you are going to . Their gain but, sadly, our loss.
I can't just can't wrap my head around the weather this week. I'm about to go out into near a near 70 degree beautiful day, and in two days I'll be digging my car out of the snow. I need to move.
Nov '14
Washington Shoprite was not bad at noon. Needed cat food, so I picked up some extras for thursday.
bryan, are you moving or leaving for vacation? would hate not getting your input on our local weather.
I went to the Shop Rite about 9 AM for just a few things. When I saw the completely full parking lot with many cars just waiting for a spot to open up, I turned around and went to Weiss. I paid a little more for my purchases, but my time ( and sanity ) is worth something too. I think between the storm prediction and holiday, Shop Rite will probably sell out of a lot of things. Good luck friends!! And I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving wherever you spend it and please get there safely.
I figured Weis would be easier then SRite, especially that friggin parking lot. Just didnt want to deal with it. Was heading to Walmart too, but spilled tea in my lap, so went home. Will tackle Walmart tomorrow. : }•
why does everyone always run to the store when there's a snow storm? do you realize how much food you already have in your pantry's and cabinets that you can eat a day or so ..they plow the roads the next day..sometimes i'll call for pizza or chinese if there open they deliver it..
Somebody save those links from Bryan.. who will be the one to fill his snowshoes?
Or, Bryan could still continue to watch out for us once he's relocated :o)
tunnel rat -Because people are crazy. LOL This week is even worse than a regular snow storm coming because of Thanksgiving. The food stores are a complete zoo the day before Thanksgiving every year. This year that will probably shift to today and tomorrow since people "think" they won't be able to go on Wednesday.
I was just picking up stuff for Tgiving dinner. That was my plan for today. Nothing to do with weather. If my company doesn't come, I'll have lots of leftovers. Yummy!
Plow the roads, on Tgiving? Hmmm....we'll see. They may not want to pay holiday OT.
I'm under the weather today guys, no pun intended. Haven't tracked much. NOAA says 6 to 10. Would think those lower amts would be in valley locs south of 80 and higher amounts as you head north and increase elevation. Also timing seems to have moved up. They say snow early and heavy at times by midday. Ending near midnight.
I made a suggestion to delay T-Giving Day meal on Thursday, and have it on Saturday!
Boy! Did I get dagger eyes....
Its 7am is the parking lot full yet at
Shoprite???

I just realized that even if the snow stops late Wed. night it's doubtful I'm going to find anyone to plow my driveway on Thanksgiving anyway.
i really hate that we are naming these snow storms.... CATO? really?

Went to Walmart about 1030ish. No crowds, no crazy shoppers, no wait at the registers. Was pleasantly surprised. After 5pm, when the 9-5ers get off, maybe it will get bad.
Check out Eastern Pa Weather Authority site or facebook page, have found them very reliable in the past:
http://epawaweather.com/northern-new-jersey-forecast-region/
Anywhere from 4-10" for our area...starting pre-dawn Wed.
Snowblower gassed up - check.
Food - check.
Firewood - check.
Alcohol - check check check.
Bring it!!!! My plan is to plow out late wed night, and leave early thursday AM- might even make it to Ohio in time for Thanksgiving dinner (if they delay it to DINNER TIME, instead of the traditionally-early-thanksgiving-dinner time)
My dog is not gonna' be happy tomorrow.... he hates going out in the snow.... held it for 17 HOURS last time....
"Dinner" is the main meal of the day, regardless of what time it's eaten.
Also, many people always refer to the mid-day meal as "dinner" and call the evening meal "supper". I think it's a dialectical thing.
All ready! My sister and niece decided not to chance it and are heading down from Vermont today. Though our wood stove is out of commission at the moment, going to enjoy the fireplace so I gave it a cleaning and loaded in the wood:)
I'll be making most of Thanksgivingday dinner tomorrow including roasting the breast. We're supposed to head I to the city early to watch the parade from DH's office:) At least finishing will be minimal when we get back:)
Bring it on....
I think we're up to the 3rd or 4th Snow Total change, 4pm Tues, 8-10+
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/phi/StormTotalSnow/stormtotal.php
I was down to half a (1.75 liter) bottle of vodka (dangerously low) and needed beer to take on the trip we are leaving for tomorrow. Plus had to get beer for my house/cat sitter. You can't expect someone to take care of your stuff without providing delicious alcoholic refreshment, can you? ;-)
What is the highest BAC at which one can legally or safely clean a litter box?
Jeepers.... I hope it's not a heavy wet snow event.
Those trees that weren't trimmed or that are dead, may come down and rip down the wires. We just do not need a power failure for the holiday.
That would make it hard to bake the turkey without electric to operate the oven.
That goes for Gas too!
That would obviously cause a hissy fit as far as the Wife is concerned.
She already threw a book at me; calling me a Jinx!
Mayor says parking restrictions will stay the same, as per WRNJ

Embryodad,
In their latest briefing at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon the NWS WAS calling for a heavy wet snow for our area:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/phi/briefing/packages/current_briefing.pdf
Stay safe everyone.
Sugar. I bet your Daddy loves every minute of this....It is really a shame that I will not get to wear my sneakers and go to the gym today...I will really miss that!!! lol!
started the fire already, will keep it burning all day, all night and all day tomorrow
I'm not at home today, so I will be appreciating all of the updates! I'll especially need to know if it will melt by tomorrow or if I need to plow.
@smilingbecs - Most likely its snow build up on your dish. If accessible try to brush it off & it should be fine.
Nov '14
luvlife - when this happened to our inaccessible dish, we used my son's power blaster water gun to clean it!!
Good idea pmnsk! I once climbed a ladder with leaf blower but don't recommend not only dangerous but in retrospect pretty dumb!
Nov '14
Don't be surprised if you hear some thunder later this afternoon. Reports of thundersnow west of Philly during this hour.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2014/11/26/updates-winter-storm-knocks-east-coast-with-heavy-rain-snow-on-the-eve-of-thanksgiving/
lots of accidents out there - be very careful http://68.236.194.223:7780/firstresponder/wc911/reclist.html
Unfortunately our dish is located on the highest point of the roof. DVDs will just have to make do.
What's going on with the storm - are we in a lull period right now, or will it be light snow until it ends later this evening?
The last NOAA update was at 11:25am.... usually they have updated by now... just curious when this is going to stop, because I don't want to have to shovel/blow TWICE.... and I need to leave early AM to get to Ohio by dinner time!! lol
Any update on the roads in Panther Valley or 517? I want Chinese food but don't want to make a delivery guy risk coming down my unplowed driveway.
Nov '14
Fujii, funny you should ask that question. I used to order pizza on a night like this, but after a young local person lost their life delivering pizza in the snow, I no longer do this. I've come to realize if the roads are too crappy for me, why would I want someone else to take that risk. I'm sure that's not going to be popular to some and especially for the business's that deliver, but the loss of a life puts a pizza delivery in perspective for me.
Just had a tree come down on our driveway an hour ago. Be careful out there! Just missed my husband by a few feet. Did take a chunk off my sister's car and broke the brake light on the trunk of our car.
Soff,

Did it all melt? I left before the storm and wondering if my driveway needs to be plowed.
There is still snow on the ground, I see a few did not do their sidewalks as usual, seems very dangerous because now that people have walked on it it is pure ice
fujixt, I just got home last night. I still have 6" on my south facing deck that gets full sun all day. Paved driveway just has a bit of snow cover but I got up it easily. Lower elevations did not look like much at all. Either way, you should not need a plow.
Nothing has melted on Schooley's Mtn. If it wasn't plowed, it is still like the day it fell. Our trees are still bent over because of the weight up there. Amazing that we drove to rt 78 and if you go through long valley, there is basically nothing.
10" in our neck of the woods in Independence; way too much and very heavy. Hub was able to snowplow the steep driveway; thank goodness. Electricity out for approximately 15 hours (went out at approx 10:00p.m.; back on approx 1:30p.m.) Today, Saturday, looks like not much has melted at all in our area of Independence. The trees are still heavy with snow, and it is looking pretty, but I will be happy when it's gone.
It will start melting tomorrow, if you didn't do your driveway because you were out of town, at this point you might as well leave it to melt.
