Movie listings removed from marquee
Ever see movie theaters make a deliberate business practice to never post a list of what's showing on its sign? Cineoplis bought Bow Tie Cinemas in Mansfield Twp near Hackettstown and only lists its phone number to call to find out what's showing and when. I think that's bad for business. As a potential customer, seeing the list when I'm driving to and from businesses in Mansfield spurs me to go see a movie. No more. Thoughts?
Not a real problem,as it very rare a picture is worth the trouble.
Expect "DUNKIRK" to be only one in last six months !
Agreed. I thought that was weird. I see it every day on my drive home from work and just seeing the name of a movie I had in the back of my head to see every day sometimes would inspire me to go see it. Especially when you think "this movie has been out a while, probably won't be much longer! I better go see it this weekend!".
I thought it would just be a winter thing , like don't want an employee freezing trying to change the sign. But I guess they're doing it all the time. I agree I want to see the info on the marquee.
Ever consider calling the theater and asking why? With today's technology I find it much easier to view the theater's online web site and at times purchase tickets in advance.
Get the Fandango app... what is this, 1986?
You should also be watching the road, not reading marquees while you're driving.
I don't think I've ever looked at a theater's marquee to see what's playing much less been inspired to see a movie listed on a marquee. I can remember being a kid and looking in the newspaper for movie listings - way before there was an internet.
@ianimal there's not much road to watch when you're stopped at the red light in front of Walgreens where you have a direct clear view of it. :)
Mark me down as Pro-Movie Listings on the Marquee.
Although, in this day in age why don't they get an electronic marquee?
We're in the era of smart phones. You don't need a marquee anymore. AMC in Rockaway doesn't use one. If you need a marquee to know movie times then you're stuck in the 90's and earlier.
I do not have a smart phone, but managed to get movie listings and times on my laptop last weekend. I really don't think there is a need for the marquee, but it's certainly not an eyesore or anything.
It's funny I haven't even noticed that it wasn't there and I go by a couple of times a week lol!
Kind of feel like since it is a movie theater, it should liist what's playing instead of just the number just like any other business advertises what they're offering.
Would having the movies posted spur me to go?......Nah, I either want to see a movie or I don't. Chances are I have seen it advertised on TV a thousand times already so I'm sure I also know the name of it without seeing it on the Marquee.
It's not one or the other, it's both!!!
I look at the marquee as advertising, like a reminder as somechik said. Then there are times times I just want to go to the movies (usually cause i'm in the mood for the popcorn or Milk Duds) and I check my phone or the web for showtimes.
To become interested in a movie a sign probably isn't going to help you and everyone knows how to get apperence and movie times from other media. But common sense and for tradition they should be posted outside.
I bet to keep costs down they don't have employees take the time to do it. I went the other day to a matinee the tix booth was empty, had to wait for someone to man the consession stand to sell me the tix. That was the only employee I saw the entire time.
Correct me if I am wrong...but the movies may be listed near the front entrance of the theatre
It is nice to see what's playing if you're stopped at the light at Rt. 57/Allen/Newburgh, but I rarely pay attention to that anyway anymore.
They do have an electronic billboard in the ticket sales lobby, which flashes everything playing and when.
The easy way is to just follow this link:

If you aren't looking for a movie playing that day, then just use the drop down box at the top of the listings to select the date you wish to go and it will then change the listing to show what's going to be on then. Pretty easy-peasy, as some would say. I usually use it in advance to see what's playing on $6 Tuesdays, so I can plan whether I have time to stop anywhere else after work before the movie or if I have to head right over from work.
I get it that if you are planning to go to the movies, it is very convenient to have access on your phone/computer etc. However, I do know that there have been times when I have sat at the light, glanced at the marquee and noting what was playing actually PROMPTED me to plan to go to the movies - the marquee is for those of us who are somewhat undecided and can be drawn in by the listing - advertising and smart I think.
I agree rleaf. When going to ShopRite I like to look at the titles. I don't watch tv where I would see any advertisement or trailers so it's the marquee or specifically look online for what movies are out. But the marquee can pique interest to look when you really hadn't thought of going before.
I agree with you both. The reason I don't pay attention so much anymore to it at the light is that I noticed Cinepolis has been replacing the listings more often with a notice that you can preorder tickets to some popular movie that will be coming up. That's why I just check the website in advance. That way I can also see whether or not the Succasunna one is showing a movie that's already no longer shown here. That is sometimes the case.
I sure wish we would see some upgrades take place at the movie theater. Maybe even expand and take Buddy's old spot.
I prefer what Cinepolis is doing right now--letting you know other important information that's exclusive to the Mansfield theater. I can check movie times using any smartphone or even a newspaper. Putting other things on the marquee like the Tuesday and Thursday children's movies is more important because you don't necessarily know to look for that online.
What would be nice, of course, is if they put up a new LED billboard, which would probably save on the backlighting needed with the current one and also would allow it to be updated extremely quickly in case of any changes or cancellations of shows, etc.
Of course that would also allow for a screen that mentions the children's movie postings or the special "select" 7PM viewings of classic movies, such as "North By Northwest" which was great being able to see in the actual theater, rather than at home in front of a TV, especially the scenery around and on Mount Rushmore!
I agree. Why would you go on your phone when you can just see it on you way to Walmart or Shoprite?
