Amazon HQ

"Amazon is looking for a second company headquarters and wants cities around the US to convince the retail giant why it should take up residency with them. Amazon says it plans to invest more than $5 billion in the new site, called HQ2, while creating up to 50,000 new jobs, and claims the development will bring "tens of billions of dollars in additional investment" to whichever area wins the bid. The company points to its Seattle location as evidence of this, claiming that investments in the site from 2010 to 2016 brought in an "additional $38 billion to the city's economy -- every dollar invested by Amazon in Seattle generated an additional 1.4 dollars for the city's economy overall." "

Wouldn't this be great for the ITZ in Mt Olive? Let them take over the whole thing! Anyone listening?

JWolfe - Those are just fulfillment centers. Nathan James is talking about a second headquarters. Big difference.

The ITC is too far from the population center as required in the RFP. It's also right on the edge of time to get to the airport and then only if you don't figure on traffic.

The cost isn't the issue or those other sites wouldn't have been built either. Those other places have much easier access to the airport.

It's not going to meet the space requirements either unless it literally through out every existing tenant, and that's not going to happen legally. Even after that they would still have to do new building on top of it all.

But if you want to encourage the ITC to bid on it, go to the ITC. Nothing's going to happen based on a forum post.

speaking of big huge campuses what's up with Pfizer way at the bottom of 206 before Bridgewater - that looks like a little city in there but never see many people going in or out?

Any news on this ?

It has been over for months, Va is the only one getting done. They also chose Ny and backed out after backlash.

eeeeh, something else was in the wind here. Otherwise, they would have moved, not just cancelled. Amazon fragging the local pols as they made this move......

i dont know, but, i'd guess not sd. if you look at hundreds of locations, and decide not 1 is perfect, but 2 are close enough, and then 1 of those shows why they are not good enough, you dont necessarily say lets go to our third best. so va will be hq2. and they did say that if they need more space than those 2, they'll use nashville. it does remind us all though that companies are out for themselves and their shareholders only. its why rules and regulations exist. no for profit company is altruistic.

25,000 jobs is alot to suck up in another location Ken....

Maybe tween decision to go and decision to blow, the pending closing of all Amazon pop-up stores signalled a tightening of the ole financial belt.

I agree companies are not altruistic; but they tend to spin. And being pissed at NYC polls, if you decided to back out; would you say it’s because your P&L took a shot or that NYC polls suck. Also, my corporate capitalistic alturism starts with customer satisfaction which is a good thing.

it's pretty clear that Amazon did not want a union and wanted the tax incentives that it was starting to look like NY / NYC could not deliver. I think the whole NYC was for better leverage with Arlington.

Seems I’m reading alot between the lines lately....

Yes, Skippy, I can read PR puff pieces. Paper does not refuse ink. They said they will spread the 25,000 NYC employees around and manage the now distributed hqtrs functions. That’s a lot of people.

Crystal City was 25k, potential to 38k, but even that’s a good trick in that area. Even housing would be difficult; crowded, expensive area.

Last Q they took a hit on expectations; they will shutter the pop-up stores.

I just say there’s more here than the flack pieces are saying. No biggee, but that’s my take. Which puts a different spin on all the political trash talk going on from all sides. Lots of postering; little truth in my book from Cortez to Bezos and anyone.

I wish someone would fill the old Basf building so sad

Tech companies typically don't like unions, but that is not the total picture. These workers (not techies) could be making 150 grand a year. The area in Queens is a deserted area that needs a total rehab. Local housing, restaurants, and other retail businesses would grow making the whole area prosper. Even with the tax breaks as a lure, the overall money that Amazon would have brought to the area, would have been enormous. To add to that, the taxes from the influx of renters, home owners, restaurants and retailers would soon close the gap. Plus the headquarters for Amazon is a fairly clean business. I don't think AOC did a good job for her district.
