Wood Burning & Pellet Stoves
Anyone have experience with one ?
Easy to maintain ?
I recently picked up a small ranch is Southern New Jersey , looking at for supplemental heat ( currently has electric baseboard ).
Gas is not available , propane & oil are not options..
Thanks in advance for feedback.
Steven
I purchased a Harmon pellet stove it was the best stove I could find it cost me like 5 grand installed. I had a 3200sq home it would heat entire house but used about 6 to 7 tons a year at 250 a ton sold the house it was a giant pain in the a** . If it's a small house check out Fujitsu mini split heat pumps there electric but very very efficient unlike baseboard only problem is the stop working around -5 deg I believe I have one works great.
I have a 2500square foot home use a Englander stove from Lowe's purchase about seven years ago and bosch we got used the Englander we use twenty for seven the other one just on really cold nights clean out once a week last year I used for tons of pellets at one hundred eighty from Lowe's free delivery we love it
We heated our last house with a wood burning stove and we loved it! We are now looking to convert our current fireplace into a wood burning stove. For a small ranch a stove should work great. My only suggestion, make sure it still works if the power goes out. Good luck!!
We used to have a pellet stove in our 3 bedroom ranch. It was the only heat we used. It did the job but I wasnt in love with it.
The damn thing would get clunkers right when you wanted to go to bed. So you would have to wait for the thing to cool down and clean it before running it again. You would also need to do a deep cleaning each week. Maybe not all stoves require this but ours did. It could have been because we used it 24/7.
It did have a thermostat so that was nice.
We purchased our first pellet stove over 20 years ago when they were just starting to get popular. We have oil heat as our main source of heat but the pellet stove is on the living level of our home and has saved us a lot in oil bills when we use it over the winter months. We purchased a new pellet stove at Lowes a few years ago and love this one just as much. Easy and clean way to heat your house.
Love my wood stove- Vermont Castings:) Efficient and can warm the whole 2 story colonial if need be. Being on a wooded lot, there is an abundant supply of fuel:)
Englander stove from Lowe's is the one I am looking into, seems to be a good value to heat 1500 sq. ft.
No more wood burning stoves, did that for 25+ years , way too much work involved and it makes a real mess .
I have been reading quite bit, seems if you vacuum them every 2 days , they run will with no problems forever.
No I need to locate a piece of marble for a platform ( 40" x 40" should do it. )
Appreciate all the feedback.
Steven..When we got our first pellet stove...we had a brick platform installed in the one corner of the room. This has stood up nicely for the last 20 years and also looks quite nice and decorative for the stove to sit on..
My thoughts are ...the marble is 1 pc. no glue, no grout / cement ....just glue to a 2 x 4 frame on floor
Ideally I would like to locate a pc.of aluminum diamond plate ( powder coated black ), but that would take time.....trying to get done before frost comes along ( not safe to go on roof )
Do yourself a favor and research reviews on stoves before purchasing and pellets as well.

We used a piece of diamond plate, painted with high heat engine paint, on the wall behind our stove. We bought it from Hackettstown Steel on Stiger Str. a few years ago.
When you purchase your pellet or wood burning stove...the seller should be able to advise you what is the best base for it to sit on. In our case we selected the brick base as it not only met the code for our particular stove but was attractive as well. They installed the base the day they installed the first stove.
going to use 2 x 6" lumber for platform, will cover w/ 3/4" plywood, then acrylic mastic to bond ceramic tile to top
Thank you all for your input, much appreciated !
The stove should have a spec sheet on what is needed for the base and wall. We used Micor with tile on top for under the stove.
There is a "cement type" board they have at store ( saw last night ) will likely use that instead of plywood ( with stringers underneath every 12" )
I don't see that anyone mentioned it, but get a permit for the install. If something happens your homeowners will not cover if it proper procedure and inspections weren't done.
Good point, SubsailorJoe...That is what I meant in my above post about the base that the stove sits on being "up to code"...
Permit is filed , I am actually having an HVAC company do the install , costs some dollars, , however all the liability is theirs should there be a problem,,,they have to install according to code .
I am providing the platform and stove, the remainder of components ( chimney pipes, brackets, thru ceiling and roof by them.
I have respect for roofs these days, and to install by myself, is not something I am interested in after reviewing .
Using 11 ga aluminum for back plate on wall , will likely paint black for now.
SOS is gret, however this place is down south jersey ( 2nd home , close to my work for next few years, rather than continue to pay someone else home off, I found this as an estate sale
Talk to Wood Heat in Flemington. Great people, excellent service.
I put in a wood-burning insert into the house 5 years ago....they did a great job. we heat about 75% of our needs with the stove.
