How does someone steal a car these days? Was it an old pick up the hot wired? I know Hyundais and kias are apparently easy to steal but I thought most modern cars won’t start without the close proximity of the chip in the key(fob)

Apparently, unless you keep your keys in a Faraday cage type enclosure, there are several ways to start the car without them being in the car, which I won't go into. On top of that, when aftermarket remote start systems are put in cars, an actual key, with an inductive loop of wire wrapped around it is usually used to be able to bypass the need for a key in the lock cylinder or sensor. This allows someone to sometimes use the actual key to start the car. Of course, once they have one key, and know the proper procedure, a thief can program additional blank keys.

As an old saying goes, "Locks are for honest people".

My truck has something that today's car thief can't deal with - a manual transmission .

Phil is correct about the fob cage. My son is a police officer, and said that car thieves use an antenna device to facilitate the connection between the key in the house and the vehicle. Takes two people but it's a thing.

And lol @97XBAM!

Thanks for confirming what I brought up. Yes, they use an antenna to receive the passive signal from your fob to an "interrogator" (we'll call it that), then rebroadcast it, so the car thinks it's present. Of course, your phone may also have an app that bluetooth's to your car to communicate between the two.

That's something to be careful of too, though I'm not sure if you can do much more than turn that app off when not using it, especially if it allows remote start. Some systems shut the engine off, and require the key to be present in order to restart the car, but I'm not sure if all makes take those precautions.

Depending on the size of the fob, people's best bet is to either wrap it in foil, or place it in the refrigerator or freezer. I don't think many people have any of the old breadboxes made of metal anymore, but that would likely be OK too. Think of it this way, it's like having an RFID safe wallet or purse to help keep your ATM/debit/credit card info safe from being read remotely.

Of course the first line of defense is to close and lock all windows and doors.

97XBAM So true. Even as far back as the late 80's when I managed various R&S stores, some of the auto techs had to ask me to drive a car into the shop for them (and back out), because they couldn't drive a stick! Now it's rarer than hen's teeth to find someone who can, especially younger drivers, since they're so rare.

H-town, I am so sorry. Depending on the road, you get a lot more traffic, Lawrence is a main bypass in town for example. Was there anything special about the vehicle? I doubt you left the keys in there, but open doors? Again, so sorry but I would expect more theft there, you have a lot of strangers passing though, a lot more neighbors than Jane's Chapple, etc. On your road, if a stranger is walking by, you probably glance and nothing more. On Jane's Chapple, you might be thinking photo and 911. Just kidding but not many houses out there, and even few strangers walking or driving by.

I wish the cops would tell us more on the how's and why's (if possible) on these so we could be sure to protect ourselves without getting crazy about it.

Time for The Club to make a comeback

Tonight Channel 2 NY is airing a segment on how they're stealing cars right from the driveways via the methods we've mentioned. Not sure exactly what time it's on though. Could be any minute between now and 6:30pm.

Indeed! Winner, International, maker of "The Club", used U.S. based steel companies to manufacture their product and helped to revive the town in Western PA that the inventor (Steve Winner) was from, after it became part of the "rust belt" in the late 70's.
