Kings Highway re-zoning for condos
What's the latest on this? Our town is being destroyed little by little.
There was much opposition to this project and it died. Perhaps it could be resurrected?
There is a proposal for new dwellings on Newburgh Rd which is under consideration.
To answer your question: in my lifetime there has been a 132% increase in the US population.
Development will never stop. The population of NJ and the US will continue to grow. Those people have to live somewhere and all of the supporting infrastructure will be built, like warehouses, retail, etc. Just a fact of life
My friend who lives in South Jersey told me that builders like hovnanian and toll brothers go from town to town building on every square foot of available acreage and then move on to the next town. Urban sprawl
I remember when Diamond Hill was built and added more people and traffic to our little town!

Housing developments are one thing. Population increase requires more homes. But the amount of condos/townhouses/apartments is very concerning considering how many people per sq/acre they can hold. The two new new complexes on bilby rd are going to cause a noticeable traffic increases despite the “traffic studies” that state otherwise.

Funny what you find on agendas

I didn’t even know this was happening . I saw detour signs on 57 by kings highway
Here is what I understand is the latest regarding the proposal. This is a person posting on a Mansfield forum to alert folks.
"I Just want to remind anyone that’s concerned about the development of 125 Townhouses that are being proposed to be built on Kings Highway, Long Valley/Washington Twp, there’s a meeting on Wednesday, Oct 2nd at the Washington Township Municipal Building 7pm. Please come and let your voice be heard. Spread the word.
I know I want to find out if there any studies or improvements being considered to address the traffic congestion, road safety, and wear on the roads that an additional 300+ cars will bring.
KINGS HIGHWAY IS NOT A HIGHWAY!"
Townhouse/condo construction to be POSSIBLY discussed at Township Committee work session November 7th, 7-9pm. Check agenda closer to that date.
Long Valley (Wash. Twp.), in an effort to protect their pristine and isolated long valley have always pushed development to the edges of their little paradise. Screw everybody else.

I think location is most likely determined by the availability of water/sewer facilities.
I live on Glen Ridge at the top of Kings Highway. Kings Highway is Not an Highway…and not a to smart place to add 125 townhomes. Traffic has already become high on Kings Highway. Getting out on 57 can be tricky. Traffic going into Hackettstown is getting backed up. Furthermore, our plumber told us our aquifer is down 40%. Washington Township just posted a request for residents to conserve water. Where are the 125 units getting their water?
My understanding is that these townhomes would use Mansfield/Hackettstown’s sewage facility. There is plenty of land on the other side of Long Valley to build apartments. And, if this is being built to provide lower income housing, 25 units is a lame excuse, as it is not nearly enough. You can bet the other 100 units will be high rent. Nothing in our town for seniors.
Next meeting is in December.
Washington Twp is already behind in meeting the state mandated numbers for providing affordable housing, and in the new requirements has to provide 200+. Not surprisingly they are pursuing construction approvals for Kings Highway and Newburgh Road.
Drill down into this article and you can find the affordable housing numbers for any town in NJ https://www.lehighvalleylive.com/warren-county/2024/10/warren-county-mayors-respond-to-nj-affordable-housing-guide-for-2025.html
How are these state mandated obligations fair for any town in north and central NJ? The developers build affordable housing at a small percentage.
