Both good choices for last minute but I am prejudice I think now with Walmart. They did two beautiful sheet cakes for DH's birthday party recently and not only were they delicious but the price was about 1/2 of anywhere else.

I wonder if it's too late to get one from Harper's? I've always liked theirs the best and I like supporting the local, small-town businesses over the big chains. I realize it's a little more money, but I think it's worth it for our town.

Weis also does spectacular cakes. Sorry, I don't think Harpers is any big deal. I find their cakes to be kind of generic.

I like Weis cakes. Shop Rite uses "better cream", not butter cream icing ..and it just doesnt taste right to me.

sams club has great cakes

She didn't ask how to bake a cake or how to buy a box..she asked where to get one. Not everyone likes to bake or has time, or whatever. I forgot about Sams..yes, they are great also. Surprisingly good.

A basic vanilla cake and you can't decide were to go?? How difficult can this question really be??

not all vanilla cakes are made equally , i think some are good and others not so much

Weis or Walmart you can't go wrong. Not a fan of shoprite cakes at all.

Not a fan of any of these suggestions. I cannot believe people actually like Sams cakes or even Shoprite cakes. To each his own I guess.

Any good bakery can make a cake for you on a whim. They always have the basics. Haprers has done it for me several times. Its homemade doesnt taste like oil and always fresh!

Re: cakes please help which is better?

I haven't bought a cake at a bakery in years. Last time was my wedding cake purchased at Sicilia Bakery in Washington for the reception DH and I had after we returned from Vegas. Not sure whether it was good, we did quite a few shots that night....LOL Christine, opinion?

Best bought cakes around I've had are at Rico Pan. If you're in the market for one, I definitely suggest looking into that.

GC: I haven't been in there yet. Do they sell anything you'd recommend in mini sizes? I can't trust meself around regular-size sweets.

Sicilia Bakery whipped up a chocolate mousse cake for us once while we were in the store. It's an awesome bakery and always has lots of stuff available.

I agree emaxx. Anything I have ever had there was good. They have nice stuffed breads and rolls as well as sweets. Ironically enough, the baker there is German. Interesting for a bakery with an Italian name.

German? I guess I need to find another Italian bakery then...it's not real Italian unless there's an Italian baking.

Good luck trying to find an Italian baker in Warren Co. Growing up in Essex County I am extremely spoiled by fine Italian bakeries.

Germans are good bakers as well though fastnachts anyone???

No department store cakes for me. After seeing the baker wipe sweaty pits, put on latex gloves without washing the hands and turn back to the oven, no way not for me.

maja, you prefer to buy where they do the very same thing, but 'behind the scenes' so you don't have to watch it? haha

cbel, I believe that Rico Pan sells slices of some of their cakes. Our wedding cake was from there and got rave reviews. It was beautiful AND delicious!

Thanks, Lori. I'll have to stop in.

Lori exactly right!! I'm sure some disgusting things happen in restaurants, but if I don't see the chef sweating into the soup, I'll eat it. Alcohol to kill the germs if available:)

No Italians in Warren County? I'm going to have to petition some of my East coast gumbas to open up a joint. :-)

My kids love the brownies at Sicilia's. Napoleons are good too.

Hey tell more about Rico Pan cakes! I do remember a thread where they were discussed but I forget which one. Do they have plain vanilla and chocolate cakes and/or more traditional Colombian cakes?

0ur cake was a yellow cake with a berry filling. How sad that I don't remember if it was strawberry or raspberry, though I'm leaning towards the latter...

Germans are excellent bakers. There are no Dunkin Donuts, Panera bread etc. in Germany because they wouldn't fare well against a Bakeri or Konditori.

Before my "German baker" comment blows up into a major issue, I was being sarcastic. It was in reference to this previous discussion:

Like I said, Sicilia Bakery is a great bakery and it doesn't matter if the baker was German, Italian, or a caveman.

I am surprised at the comments about Rico Pans cakes. I go there and I do like other things that they make ~ especially their empanatas (sp?) but I remember my boss got my b-day cake from there and I shared it with her kids. Well I didn't care for it at all and couldn't even eat it, but I am not a huge "cake person" so I just figured it wasn't to my liking, but the funny thing was the kids who were 7 & 8 at the time and NEVER turn down a treat wouldn't eat it either! They both spit it back out on their plate and said it was awful!

Maybe we just got it on a bad day or something. I guess it is worth another try.

I agree that Walmart has some very good bakery items, although I have never gotten a cake from there.

I am not much of a cake person, so for me I care more about how it looks than how it tastes. For my DD's birthday the last few years, we have gone to Shoprite. They have done a BEAUTIFUL job on her cakes, from Dora the Explorer to Ariel (with a gorgeous green/blue/purple frosting that really looked like the ocean) to this year's iCarly cake. I have also gotten great cakes for my other DD's birthday at Harpers. At both places, I thought the cakes looked great and tasted great, too. (But again, I am not a cake lover, so the taste isn't that important to me.)

So, smilesalot, what did you end up buying and how did you like it?

Hopeful in H-town Hopeful in H-town
Feb '11

cbel - Lori's right that you can buy slices instead of a whole cake. Plus they have any number of smaller buns and rolls. I seem to remember cakes with both strawberries (on top) and raspberry inside, tres leches, and rum cake.

Und ich will nicht die deutsche Grammatikpolizei sein, aber 'Backerei' und 'Konditerei'. ;-)

hopeful we got one from walmart it was good. it served the purpose!! thank u for asking

Weis has delicious cakes. I always get them there for our church events. They always have a nice variety available ready to buy; round and sheet.

I'm a little late with this one, but I have done two different things that my kids prefer to the store bought cakes -

1) Bake two or more giant Chocolate Chip Cookies (or sugar or whatever) and have a cookie decorating contest. Lots of frosting, sprinkles, etc. --- I'm very biased in my judging, the birthday kids team always wins!

2) Bake cupcakes and let them frost and decorate themselves! repeat, lots of frosting, sprinkles, etc.

It counts as an activity and a snack at the same time! This seems to work better for the 7 and older crowd, younger kids get considerably more messy!
