rt 80 at standstill?
Anyone know whats going on with Rt 80 just before allamuchy exit? Friends are sitting in traffic that isn't moving?
AS OF 4:42PM, THERE'S AN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION ON I-80 WESTBOUND AREA OF EXIT 19 - CR 517 IN ALLAMUCHY TWP. ALL LANES TEMPORARILY CLOSED 5-10 MINUTE DELAY.
I'm guessing that 5-10 min delay is now much worse.
Unless the motorcyclist intends to throw the bike to avoid a collision, it doesn't often end well.
saw these guys on their motorcycles on my way home. They were flying, weaving in and out of traffic and passing between cars!! It was insane and I said it will be a miracle if an accident doesn't occur. Got off 80 and saw the accident from the bridge before ambulances go there. Unfortunate.
maja - Not worse than any other interstate. It's what happens. It's life. It's what you learn.
I just got back home from that mess...there are many many cars broken down on the side of the road on the west bound side of rt80 before exit 19...its lousy...
Broken down because they probably ran out of gas. They were hoping to get to PA so they could pump it themselves (like the rest of the world) instead of waiting for some (edited) to do it.
Sad about the accident. It is a curvy part of 80 where lots of these horrible accidents happen...fault or not.
They were hoping to get to PA where it's 18 cents more a gallon for the privilege of having to put your own labor into it?? Doesn't seem like common sense to me.
Oldman - Thanks for getting back to me. I am surprised that there is so much overheating since todays temps were relatively mild compared to what we have been experiencing. But then again, I wasn't stuck on 80W today...

Yeah, I don't think very many people would wait to get gas in PA. It's much more likely that PA people come to NJ to get gas, for the reasons GC noted above.
Self-serve is a joke. I lived in two states when it was approved there. Same or higher price, and you get the added benefit of having that gas smell on your hands while you drive to work, or get to have gas drop on your new shoes on the way to a sales meeting, getting soaked when it rains or freezing your hands off in January.
Really, a bad idea.
BLD it sucked...rt 80 on a hot saturday afternoon...was like this...tractor trailer brake smoke and clutch smoke...hotter than hell...cars broke down all over...people cutting me off...trucks cutting me off...all this at 3 miles per hour...not fun...
It sounds like the same place as yesterday's car fire - that last mile before exit 19 has had many accidents/incidents over the years. I have spent a lot of time on that hill! Snowstorms too.....
The news just said a guy in an SUV held up a gas station in Jefferson and the owner was dragged to his death when the guy drove off...this is more than likely why there were back ups on the highway. He drove off onto route 15, I think they just said.

@ Pam, funny, when I posted mine, yours wasn't there yet. Now it shows you posted 18 minutes ago, mine 6 minutes ago...go figure! At any rate, now we know what happened.

I was on I-80 when this happened. The motorcycles were weaving in and out, going between cars driving side by side. The cars were traveling between 70 and 75 mph. The motorcycles were going much faster. When I saw the first one, I said...he is going to die. As I passed the accident scene later, I realized it wasn't the first one, but another one in the group. How sad. People often think they are invincible, that death can't touch them. Not true. We are not promised anymore time than the second we are in right now. I sure hope that he was a Christian. Eternity is a very long time. The most important thing in this life is knowing where you will spend the rest of eternity.
So sad BLD, to lose your life over a few lottery tickets, so senseless. I guess human instinct kicks in and you want to stop someone from stealing from you, really such a shame.
Jean...I was there too...and saw the people on motorcycles doing that...its funny but at 3 miles per hour Rt 80 is a different place...you can see and hear the people you are stuck in traffic with...and smell their cigar and cigarette smoke...it reminded me of Jack Tannehills River Of Rt 80 song
We just returned from a trip out to Saylorsburg, Pa. and never experienced anything else in my life on the trip out over the Delaware Water Gap..Motorcycles going at high speeds weaving in and out of the highway traffic..one shot in front of our truck and we almost had it for a new hood ornament...(I say that in jest but this was not a funny situation). Is this something new with the gangs of motorcycle riders??? It is almost as if they have a death wish because I hate to say this...they have absolutely no protection if an when a accident does happen. Glad to get back home safe and sound..thanks to DH and his good reflexes.
and the police at once should have closed 1-80 at the nearest exit befor the wreck and put the traffic on to local roads . and then clear out the people on the high way so they are not stuck out there running out of fuel or over come by heat
I too just came back from rt 80 around noon. There is no way to describe the at least 100 motorcyclists that I saw other than asses. They were goin over 100 miles an hour weavin and weaving in and out. This was a disasterwaiting to happen!!! If they crash they deserve it don't signal ride the lines. If they crAsh they deserve it!!!! Causing people to swerve grow up!!!!! Then I saw one who crashed layin on the side of the road. Where are the cops?......
Is this a new thrill thing happening? I have never seen this before...whole gangs of motorcycles doing this? The strange thing was that there was a patrol car just a few miles back from this accident. Either they didn't do this going by him or he let them do it. Very sad that he didn't catch them and stop them before the accident happened. Still sad about this.
I don't understand this either, Jean..and it seems to be those doing this are riding the lighter weight bikes unlike the Harleys that at least have some protection if they are hit. They are doing this in gangs of 25 or more bikes at a time and almost as if they are playing some form of "Russian Roulette" or "Dodge the bullet" game. Life is short enough to end it that way...Wondering too if there are any "rules of the road" that the cops can pull them over for doing this and endangering the lives of not only their own but we automobile drivers on the highway as well.
well lets see they are not signalling they are speeding, they are riding in between the lanes. I think that should be enough for a ticket it certainly would be if I was driving my SUV like that. Yesterday i too almost had one on my hood, they are endagering MY LIFE not just there own. I had NO sympathy at all for the ahole who crashed his bike into the guard rail yesterday. He was actually one who cut right infront of me (no signal speeding) and his ass was hanging out of his pants that alone almost caused me to hit my brakes, and then he WOULD have gone right through my windshield. He got hurt "tough crap."
This situation has me quite upset too, LV, as it could have been disastrous for us yesterday too out there with the girl biker almost flying into the hood of our truck. It seems to be the younger bikers( of course everyone looks young to me anymore) doing this and lots of them riding with their dates or young girls on the back as well. They are smart enough too to know that it is almost impossible for the State Police to pull over a whole group of 25-30 bikers and give them all tickets if and when they catch up with them.
hey they want to do tricks on there bikes at 60mph in front of me and they fall in front of me it will be blump blump as i ride over them .had a guy kneeling on the seat and doing wheelies in front of me .

While this accident is a terrible tragedy I don't think it's fair to lump all motorcycle riders into one crazy group of reckless, crazy drivers. My husband has been riding for over 10 years now and he has always been and continues to be very safe and cautious when he rides, more so when he has me or ds on the back. I worry more about distracted drivers in cars, truck and suv's than I worry about him. This constant need to text, eat and talk on the cell is out of hand. Pay attention to your surroundings people! Motorcycles are much harder to see and much easier to overlook. Driving is becoming increasingly difficult no matter what you drive/ride. Just the other morning my dh hit a deer that leapt out of the woods right in front of his car. Didn't see it until it was right in front of him. Had he not seen it in that quick second the consequences might have been much worse than a dented bumper and broken headlight. Now don't go all nuts and jump all over me...there are some crazy motorcyclists out there and I have seen them but not everyone is like that. We bought a Goldwing last year because it's a bigger, heavier, somewhat safer bike to ride. Not all motorcycle riders are bad....just wanted to put my 2 cents in.

Lisa L: If you will note on my earlier post I mentioned that the people that we see riding safely and properly are the ones with the Harleys and bigger bikes. However, I feel sorry also for these bikers such as your husband who are trying to drive safe as well as the automobiles out there now on the highways with this nonsense going on with these gangs of bikers speeding and darting in and out of traffic. It is scary and quite frankly, after witnessing this the other day..am not anxious to do any highway driving again.
I noticed the same thing with the bikers about a week ago (6/18)...only we were heading east on Rt. 80...about 4PM. Nearly a dozen or so biker driving like idiots, not surprised this happened.
Joyful...Rt 80 scares me on a good day. I make my husband call or text me when he arrives at work if he takes his bike. It's a long 45 minutes from when he leaves the house (we live in B'town and he works in Parsippany) until I hear from him. I too have witnessed the crazy motorcycle riding....do these folks think they are invincable? I think not!
