When did milk delivery stop in H-town?
Hi all,
a neighbor I just met was very kind in giving me a picture of our house from an earlier time, and I am trying to date it. (We have a real old house in town, and I'm always interested in the history of it.) I think it is either the late 50's or early 60's, but the only thing I can tell that might mark it is a Welsh Farms milk delivery box on the front porch. Any idea when milk delivery here in Hackettstown ceased?
Thanks!
Gees, who knows. I remember the Milk man coming where I grew up,but also the Bread man coming once a week with all kinds of baked goods in his truck. You know what that looks like to a kid ? Emmmmm.....hehehe
We used to have all kinds of delivery trucks around when my children were growing up in Hackettstown .Back in the 60's.... Milk, bread, a fish man and even laundry and cleaning pick up and delivery. Of course, there was always the ice cream truck too!! And...believe it or not...your family Dr. would come to your home if necessary.
My neighbors had milk delivered up until about 5 years ago --- it was sooo cool, but once her kids were out of HS she stopped it...... so, milk delivery does happen, but it's expensive....
I had milk delivered in Independence into the mid 70's. I stopped it because sometimes he was late and I would have to leave before he arrived. Then the milk was in the box all day. But the price at that time was not really much more that the stores charged. It wasn't Welsh Farms, Can't really remember the name, but maybe Johanna Farms?
My parents use to get milk delivered back in the 80s. It was from Welsh Farms. I thought it was the coolest thing! LOL

This is a link to the delivery by Welsh farms. It gets you to the approximate time frame, but based on this article it will be hard to pin it down. Looks like delivery went on for a long time.
Long Valley Dairy still delivers to the Hackettstown area...they also offer other dairy related products...heres a couple of old Welsh Farms bottles from when they still delivered...heres the link to Long Valley Dairy http://www.longvalleydairy.com/
I've found some if those Welsh Farm bottles on our property (while hiking in the woods).
What are the benefits to having milk delivered? Fresher?
@Oldman..I love the Welsh Farms milk bottle. Was the purpose of that type to collect the cream from the milk? For some reason, I thought I read that the cream would rise to the top of the milk bottle. I have a love of milk bottles, and dairy related things.
Oldman, love the bottle picture! Bessie, good thought! Hopefully someone will answer.
Looks like some sort of separation on the bottles by the design, especially on the one with the circular top, where the cream would rise up and you could then get it out, but would be interesting how. Did it run out? Was it solid and you scooped it or spooned it out? Some sort of gravy separator method?
I remember that we had the milk box from Welsh Farms on our carport too, but I don't have a visual of the cream/milk in the bottle, and I also can't remember what my mom and dad would have done with it. Save it for coffee, strawberries or baking maybe?
I do remember my brother with a bottle of milk and a box of Oreos!
the milk bottle on the right is called a cream top...because the bubble shape is where the cream was...the customer could then spoon the cream...out of the top...when the weather was very cold...the milk would partially freeze when left in the milk box...and sometimes lift the tops off of the bottles...
That is super cool about Long Valley Dairy. Glad to see someone make it in a niche market. Unfortunately, we don't go through enough of their products to warrant the weekly delivery.
MILK delivery, Been there done that, also Friehoferr and Kent bread. Joyful ask your BH about that! Still looking for Panther Ledge milk bottles. Four orange and black types. One exceedingly rare, CJ Ryan oriented. Price is right! Remember the creamery cor Franklin and Willow Grove?
oldsoldier...what was the name of the creamery at the corner of Franklin and Willow Grove...here is one of my Panther Ledge Dairy bottles
I have a Welsh Farms milk delivery box also...heres a couple of my Port Murray Dairy bottles...that dairy closed down in 1970...
Aunt Alice and uncle Joe lived right across the street from Port Murray dairy, I remember them pouring the skim milk on the RR tracks after they separated out the cream.
OLDMAN etall: Creamery was origionally Aders (the corner house was the family farmhouse). Sold to Clendenen (CJ) Ryan, renamed after his place at Panther Ledge (renamed by subsquent developers as Panther Valley - mansion becme part of golf course complex). CJ retired WW II naval comd - grandson of Thomas Fortune Ryan - brother-in-law John Rutherford. Check milk bottle for initials imprint. As to
special necked bottles, a special metal spoon was avaiable - place in top of bottle, seal off top cream and pour into cream pitcher - very ingenious ( raw milk was required),
