Breyers Fake Ice Cream
About 3 months ago A&P and shoprite had Breyers ice cream on sale. I never normally buy that brand but it was a good bargin. I bought butter pecan, told the family that I think breyers went down hill the taste is lousy maybe thats why breyers is always on sale. Well I bought it again giving it another try. This flavor was cherry vanilla & it was so bad I picked the cherries out & chucked the rest. I was blaming my fridge because it was never getting hard. The taste was a clone for cool whip. Thought of bringing it back but I decided to call the company to see if they changed the formula. I just did not remember it being this bad. After a phone conversation with the company I was enlightened that Breyers ice cream is not REAL it is in fact cool whip. She told me that I didn't read the container which said FROZEN DAIRY DESERT. I told her that all the containers have the same black color. She said to look at the bottom of the containers where the weight is. So the following day I went to the supermarket & sure enough there were those words on 97% of the products. I counted up how many ice cream flavors they really made & it was 3 or 4 the rest was PHONEY. So I bought Breyers vanilla that said ice cream turns out that its still not real because it was ice milk with chunks. I also looked at other brands & they too have this subsitute. FROZEN DAIRY DESERT. God knows how many times all of us have been DUPED by not knowing or even checking. Why are were we paying the same price for something that is not real & how long has this been going on. Imagine the profit they are making. I wish I knew this info before. THEY WILL NOT CATCH ME AGAIN.

I noticed the words frozen dairy desert quite a while ago, and it was right there in an obvious spot, not hidden on the bottom...
I bought a cuisinart ice cream maker and hope I can make the real thing. Used to love Breyers but it is no longer the same product.

I was never a big Breyers fan to begin with...I like Welsh Farms, a bit pricey but it's worth it.
Frozen yoghurt, "slow churned", "lite", no sugar added, fat free, "Carb Smart", etc.
There are enough euphemisms of what either is or isn't in it to make anyone wonder. Yet you'll also not like what qualifies as "all natural".
Nothing beats my ice cream maker too, A good day! Especially during strawberry season! I know what goes in it, and it is absolutely the best tasting ice cream!
I don't buy ice cream very often, as I don't eat it. So when I buy it, I buy it for my husband. He likes Turkey Hill and Ben and Jerry's best.
Yeah, I noticed that a while ago. When I do buy Ice Cream, I make sure it says "Ice Cream". We have an ice cream maker, though, and as said above, it is far superior.
Been buying turkey hill natural in the black container. Only has 3 or 4 ingredients milk, sugar , and the flavor.
I had the same experience with Breyers! We thought the freezer was broken! Turns out the ice cream just sucks!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't freeze and it's full of air. I also noticed the "frozen dairy dessert" wording on the package. Ben and Jerry's makes a good ice cream as does Hagen Daaz because of the consistency. Not a lot of air. I usually buy Turkey Hill or Friendly's at Shop Rite because it's on sale.
I noticed the Dairy dessert thing a long time ago as well. We also make our own now using our ice cream maker. All those "thickeners", "stabilizers" and preservatives in the so called "all natural" ice cream make me think otherwise.
A dairy dessert is the sister of the "cheese product" never new the word product meant it is nothing like the product.
Making it yourself is fun. I have made ice cream, gelato and ice cream made from cottage cheese for a low carb dessert. YUMMMM
Frozen Dairy Dessert refers to the amount of butter fat and air in it. Several brands are frozen dairy dessert, not just Breyers.
And the ppl that make Breyers make Ben & Jerry's, while the ppl that make Edy's make Haagen Daaz.
Just a little ice cream background for ya'.
My wife worked for Edy's for ten years. The change to "frozen diary dessert" is something that several companies have done, due to the rising cost of dairy over time. The formula changes periodically to adjust to the fluctuations in dairy prices as well as consumer demand. Breyer's switched at the end of last year (on some flavors), and Edy's did this a handful of years ago (again, only on some flavors). I believe Edy's has reverted back to Ice Cream for many flavors.
h-town proud is basically correct. Nestle owns Edy's (has since the mid 2000s), and also owns Haagen Dazs. HD has not changed its formula during this time (aside from some "light" options offered using the "slow churn" process Edy's created in 2004) and is created separately from Edy's. Breyer's is owned by Unilever, as is Ben & Jerry's. However, these two brands operate independently from one another, and are simply distributed as part of the Unilever portfolio.
It should be noted that our local Dairy Queen has not been Ice Cream for many years. You will be hard pressed to find any indication of "cream" anywhere on their menu.
I can talk all day about ice cream if you'd like...
Anybody remember Yuengling ice cream from their childhood? They made the BEST mint chip... and it's coming back after a 30-year hiatus:
http://www.yuenglingsicecream.com
I havent found decent ice cream in this part of the country, but if any of you ever make it down south, look for Blue Bell ice cream (not Blue Bunny) Blue Bell is only distributed in the southern states but its the most incredible ice cream ever!
Breyers was a national icon, whether you liked it or not, it was a simple recipe made with natural ingredients. It was a fairly light ice cream versus the more expensive richer blends.
And now it's not ice cream. Unilever ruined it in to compete with other "ice desserts." From an earlier post:
"Man, talk about being ratted out......
After I was so proud of Unilever for using their logo on all brands; they even do it on the TV ads.
They own Breyers which, in 2012, "switched" from making ice cream to ice desserts. Whatever lame rational they have, it sounds like New Coke to me.
Now I know to look for the U with suspicion of a company focused on the bottom line and perhaps not me, a consumer.
If you love Breyers like I love my Peach Breyers ---- lodge a complaint on their website. Maybe we can unNewCoke them too. It's tough to find the "contact" page, but if you head to the "chat" form and type some stuff, but not a question, the contact page will come up.
I want my Breyers back."
OMG, that is what is wrong with my beloved Breyers. I have been buying their ice cream for years, and recently have been stupefied as to what is wrong with it. It's just.... gross! I don't even like it anymore. You're right, it won't freeze, it tastes weird... how could they do this to an iconic brand? It's whole appeal was it's simplicity. They have definitely lost themselves a customer. I kept blaming my freezer too.
You know what, I had even noticed that wording, but in today's world where we have to make a fancy name for everything (Administrative assistant vs. secretary, environmental specialist vs janitor) I didn't think anything of it.
OK,Just checked the freezer. We have,
Turkey Hill,Butter Pecan Premium Ice Cream
Friendly Vienna Mocha Chunk Premium Ice Cream
Stone Ridge Vanilla Real Ice Cream
Bryers peanut butter cup Light ice cream
Not a single one says "Frozen Dairy product.
What's up with that?
Even products that are still legally labeled as "ice cream" have a hell of a lot more air whipped into them than in days gone by. When I was a kid, a bowl of ice cream would still be frozen a 1/2 hour after you started eating it... now it's soup in 10 minutes.
We also buy non dairy like Soylicious chocolate or pomegranate and it is great. For the vegans out there. But it is more money .

AT one time Breyers was a very good ICE CREAM but like every thing it changed to high price chheepo taste
wish they sold ben and jerrys white russan ice cream around here
Too MUCH ice cream?? Nonsense, they have six hungry mouths to feed. I love the stuff!! I could use some right now, but I'm too busy. Way too busy. In fact, I'm going back to work right this minute. Really I am.
I stock up on any brand at Shoprite that is $1.99 for the week. Friendly's was last week. Haven't seen a sale on Edy's in months!
That's sad. I loved Bryers. Haven't had it in awhile. Last few times we've had a treat we go to Dairy Queen or The Creamery in Morristown, which has the best ice cream in the area, IMO. They have a flavor called Grandma's Kitchen. It's to die for. Cake batter ice cream, fudge, cookie dough, and caramel.
Mint contaminates ice cream and chocolate, IMO. Can't stand it. I like mint, I like chocolate and ice cream. Just don't put them together.
Best B&J flavor is Dublin Mudslide. Love that.
You don't like mint and chocolate MNJ? Me and Kramer are befuddled:
"Who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It's chocolate, it's peppermint -- it's delicious!"
We're with Vic. We stock up on Friendly's, Edy's, and Turkey Hill when they're on sale. Let's say after Sandy, we had a lot of ice cream to eat really fast.
Fake or not, Bryers has no flavor IMO. If want to eat healthy, I'll eat an apple. If I want something sweet and satisfying, I'll take one of the above mentioned better brands.
Yuck. I'm not picky at all, but mint and chocolate is one thing that doesn't do it for me. Even worse in ice cream. Plus that's a girly flavor ianimal.
Girly flavor? This coming from the guy who says "Grandma's Kitchen" with cake batter, fudge, cookie dough, and caramel is "to die for"? You better check your own panties before you cast aspersions at mine (-;
Lucky we just changed from a chest to an uprite this week. I had no idea what was on the bottom.
Read the ingredients...I try to only buy the ones that have all natural ingredients. Only a few of the Breyers say all natural.
Chocolate chip mint is my favorite......best ice cream I ever had was at Applegate Farms in Montclair.
I lived about 1/2 mile from Applegate Farms. OMG. Such memories! That was over 50 years ago!
Yes, Applegate Farms. I grew up in Essex County and that was a big treat for my family when my dad took us there. They had sooooo many flavors!
What's girly about grandma, ianimal? Who doesn't love theirs?
Nothing goes together like mint chocolate chip and the Lifetime channel.
Panties are just fine sir, TYVM.
Boxers, Jerry Garcia, Hallmark Channel, and a big box of Kleenex.
On Hallmark, everyone gets through it, everyone ends up happy and the guys don't always end up in the ditch.
It has nothing to do with Grandma... you could name that conglomerate of nonsense "Diesel Mechanic" and you still wouldn't get any self respecting man to eat it, lol.
When men want cake or cookies, they eat cake or cookies... there's no need to adulterate something as simple and wholesome as ice cream with that garbage. That stuff is strictly for women... and "to die for"? The Man Card police are on their way over there right now... please have it ready for surrender when they arrive (-;
Haha. Only after you show your woman card for loving mint choc chip. And don't mock grandma's till you try it.
http://www.homemadehints.com/unnatural-breyers-ice-cream/
Remember those old Breyers commercials about polysorbate 80 NOT being in theirs, it was natural so kids could pronounce all the ingredients. I was shocked when I read the label when I bought it last week. Sad.
MNJ, eating ice cream is like eating *****, if you need to chew, something's wrong (-;
ian, You always make me laugh, but today my jaw actually dropped. THEN I LOL'd ;)
Jams-they do still make an all natural one, with the same ingredients from the commercial...but you have to read the front of the container to find the ones that say all natural.
That's the first time I've ever heard someone say Mint Chocolate Chip is a girlie flavor. It's one of my favorites. I also worked at Friendly's for 3 years and I never got that impression.
I was surprised to hear that cocolate chip mint is a girlie flavor, too. It's my husband's favorite.
What about an ice cream dipped in rainbow sprinkles....would that be considered girlie? Lol
Ianimal- I think your safe with the chocolate chip mint....just don't go with the rainbow sprinkles on top. :)
You have brought back memories of Applegate but our hangout was O'Dows next to Triple R ranch horseback riding & ice cream I was in heaven, It use to be on rt 46 where willowbrook mall stands now. I still can remember rt 46 a 2 land highway made of cobblestone, the tires would click over & over the stones. I fell in love & wanted to take this one horse home, freckles but that wasn't happening in the city.I was heart broken when they vanished.
Tangerine, I don't recall that place, but don't worry Applegate Farms is still around.
The very best Ice Cream I ever had was Ben and Jerry's Dastardly Mash. That was my go-to pint when I was happy, sad, angry, day ending in "y", etc. The discontinued it years ago, and I still miss it:
http://www.passionaterations.com/2007/03/01/dastardly-mash-an-ice-cream-memorial/
You're welcome Jams! It is kind of a bait and switch concept, advertise your all-natural line...the tipping point that gest people hooked on your brand...but also have other products within the same family that aren't all-natural. They get people on the assumption factor!
I just love all those sneaky selling tactics Tripsy! How about the tubs like Lloyd's bbq-used to be flat on the bottom, now it's really concave to look the same size with less product. Boy they must think we're a bunch of dolts! I think back in the 70's though., that breyers was all natural. so many old time classics have cheapened their recipes-2 I can think of offhand-Lorna Doons and Social T's . Used to love 'em but they aren't the same. I thought the new Yodels tasted different too, not as good. Oh well, shouldn't be eating them anyway lol!
Where can I buy Welsh Farms Ice Cream. I agreed that it's pricey but, boy, oh boy the flavors. Yummy.
It's been a few years since I bought Welsh Farms....not too many places carry it anymore. Kings Supermarket carries it, there is one in Morristown. I thought there was one in Randolph but I couldn't find it on line.
Just an after thought I'd call A & P to see if they have it....it wasn't listed on their website but who knows maybe they have it now.
Hopefully someone on here will know of a closer place. :)
Edy's Ice Cream is pretty good for a supermarket brand.
Coldstone is awesome if you want to pay top dollar.
Rita's Custard is probably as close to old school ice cream as you will find today.
& as it was told to me that the Penn State Creamery produces ice cream so rich in fat content that it is banned in the rest of the state. Not sure if that is true - maybe some PSU people can weigh in on that but was the story i was told by a PSU Alum. Could be total BS.
RU,
Speaking of Edy's...finally we get a sale on the stuff. It'll be on sale starting today all this week at Shoprite for $2.50.
Weis has Friendly's on sale all this week for $1.77. A great price to stock up at as it NEVER gets any cheaper than that (For any brand ) these days.
There is a Kings Supermarket in Mendham.
86 E. Main Street
Mendham, NJ 07945.

Thank you sooooo much. I will be in Mendham sometime next week so guess who will be visiting Kings. I wish A&P, Shop-Rite and Weiss would carry Welsh.
I hear you Hackettstown4Ever....I don't understand why many of the major supermarkets do not carry it anymore. I will probably head over to Dales's to get it..... it's closer to me.
Family food market near panera has welch farms ice cream. I bought coffee royale last week. It was very pricey, but it brought back great childhood memories!!!!
I remember O'Dowds, but I think it was further west than that. Near Pine Brook, on Rt.46 east before you got to the end of Bloomfield Ave. The big Pine Brook Auction/Flea Market was next door. I use to go to Applegate's in Montclair and Holstein's on Broad Street in Bloomfield. Holstein's is still open. Ah, the good old days.
I can remember having Welsh Farms ice cream at the Panther Valley mall back in the 70s ....anybody else remember that ?
Applegate Farms has an interesting history.
http://www.applegatefarm.com/history.html
As a youngster, I grew up on Alderney Dairy milk delivered to the house. We only had Ice Cream from the Good Humor truck every once in a while.
When I was a little girl we had Golden Guernsey milk delivered to our milk box on the side steps. It has EXTRA fat and you had to shake it up before you used it. I loved to get a cold unshaken bottle and pour it on my cherrios. Delicious! Now all I can think about is my coronary arteries slamming shut!
And when it frooze the ceam came out the top. Thats why my brother and I had to have open heart. That and saved Bacon fat or Lard to cook with.
I am looking for Welsh Farms Coffee Royale !! pleasee help
i just have flashbacks when i was 8 years old it was the greatest ice cream ever.... where can i find it now?
Whenever I'd go down to my brother's place when he lived in Pottstown, I always loved to stop at Longacre's Modern Dairy in Barto, PA (rt. 100) for some ice cream. Awesome stuff if you're looking for something delicious and fresh! It's south of Allentown and a place to keep in mind if you're ever in the area, say for the car show in Emmaus, etc.

Welsh farms was the best in my opinion but its hard to find these days and if you can find it I don't think it's the same. :(
Can't wait for my first taste of that girly mint chip (-;
http://www.toledonewsnow.com/story/24472318/yuenglings-ice-cream-returns-to-shelves-after-28-year-hiatus
Did you see the price of it? You may need resuscitation when you pay $6 just for one quart.
It's a treat. How much was Ben & Jerrys for a pint back in the day, $4 or $5? This is pure ice cream made with local dairy products. I've got no problem with the price.
Thats neat iPhone-imal. I remember reading about Yuengling making ice cream during prohibition. Let me know if you spot it and where, I am interested in trying it.
Saw the other day on the Internet that Yeungling was making Black and Tan ice cream and really thought that was strange as Yeungling Black and Tan is a beer. (one of hubby's favorites).. On the other hand...who would enjoy beer flavored ice cream?
joyful, if you read the article, the Black and Tan name is a reference to the Yuengling beer style, but the ice cream is chocolate and caramel. Personally, I think beer flavored ice cream would be delicious though (-;
Thanks, iphone-imal for clearing that up...I should have read the article before posting. I would personally love the chocolate and caramel ice cream but I still think beer flavored ice cream could only be enjoyed by a select few....you and...... maybe Calico???
Got some Yuengling ice cream @ Weis. Tried the root beer float and black & tan. Both were delicious.
Turkey Hill is very good. Just had their 'limited edition' Deep Dark Chocolate.
Has small slivers of chocolate that melt in your mouth.
Yum!

Breyer's Natural is the classic but I don't see it on our shelves. Ben & Jerry sold out to Breyer's owner, Unilever, and they are not real anymore.
Turkey Hill has to be the natural line as well but we do stock that.
Häagen-Dazs has “Five” with only five natural ingredients which is the Breyer's recipe although may not be in the same amounts.
How to spot the cads. Just look for: Carob or Locust Bean Gum, Guar Gum or cluster bean, Tara Gum, Carrageenan, Annatto color, Mono & Diglycerides.
Real ice cream has sugar, eggs, cream, milk, and something for flavor. Anything else is added for some reason or another usually stabilizing, thickening, and emulsifying. Don't be fooled; this stuff is there just to increase profits by making ice cream either cheaper to make or easier to ship and shelve. Even flavors like chocolate can be "unreal" if alkali processed.
If you look it up, you would not like where this stuff comes from, what it is or what is does. Especially since natural ice cream is so good. These ingredients are byproducts of soap making, bio-diesel, seaweed coagulated in alcohol, middle-east gums that swell the stomach, lots of lovely stuff.
Real ice cream is not that much more expensive if you shop for it and take advantage of sales.
Happy screaming!!!!
MisterGoogle, the U on the item with a circle around it for people who follow Kosher or Islamic dietary laws. It means no meat and dairy products mixed together. It also means that the line and equipment it is made on must pass inspection by a Kosher authority.
MK - Specifically it means it's approved by the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America" to meet Jewish dietary law. It's not quite, but very nearly, the same as Kosher. Kosher is also more than just not mixing "meat" with dairy. There are kinds of fish not allowed, etc. etc.
I lived with Kosher most of my life. Fish are good to go, crustaceans including shrimp are not Kosher. If you see the U it is approved for use in a Kosher or Islamic household that adheres to the laws. In food the U means that the line the dairy food is prepared on is not used for anything containing meat products. That makes the food Kosher. You are confusing following a Kosher diet and having a Kosher household. They are often not one and the same.
4 new flavors of Yuengling's ice cream. Can't wait to taste them.
http://www.wfmz.com/news/Regional-Poconos-Coal/Yuengling-s-Ice-Cream-introduces-4-new-flavors/31293672
I have been making my own ice cream. This recipe is sooooooo good and when thawed,it tastes like and has the texture of chocolate mousse.
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/375417318913338312/
Originally, Breyers was a local Philly product made in a single plant. It was never a premium ice cream but it was a very good product made with real cream. Unfortunately, after the company was sold it continued to go down hill.
