It is interesting to see how many folks have a favorite NASCAR driver ... I used to know guys who favored either Ford, Chevy, or Plymouth ... my attachments to teams (and I would assume this is true for most fans) come from that first time your dad takes you to a game at the stadium.

The first game I ever saw was at Connie Mack Stadium in Philly and on my first professional sportswriting job I had media credentials covering Philly sports when The Vet and The Spectrum were brand new buildings.

My Rangers interest comes from seeing the Rangers' American Hockey League team (from 62-67) the Baltimore Clippers, when I was a kid. My first American League baseball game and first NFL game were in Baltimore, while visiting relatives and family friends, so I've had an abiding interest in the teams representing Baltimore ever since.

Obviously, since I went into sportswriting when I realized I'd never be an NBA player (or the ABA ... remember them?) I enjoy all sports and all teams and appreciate class and skill wherever I see it.

My old boss was an old-school Ford guy. Never owned any other make. Mark Martin was his guy and he had quite a collection of memorabilia, worth in the thousands of dollars.

When Martin left Roush and got in the 01 Chevy, all of that stuff went into the dumpster outside of our office. I remember how bare his office looked afterwards, because it was nothing but Martin floor-to-ceiling before that. He sold the business and I moved on shortly thereafter so I don't know if he moved on to a different driver... but I doubt it. He wasn't the type of guy to get fooled twice.

A few years ago I did a story about a local woman who made her house into some kind of an Earnhardt shrine ... unbelievable, all the stuff she has.

I'm old enough to remember when the Daytona 500 was the only race you saw on TV. Jim McKay (who I met in Baltimore back in 1977) used to do it for ABCs Wide World of Sports.

McKay was a cool guy to meet ... when you spend a little time with him you find out he really loves to talk about golf ... a walking encyclopedia about golf.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Dec '13

McKay is a good Segway to the Olympics ... love the Olympics, especially the ice hockey. It used to be this big USA vs. Soviet Union thing ... but I get a kick out of seeing somebody win the only gold medal some small country wins.

I remember this national columnist Jim Murray writing, as the 1971 World Series got underway, that the Pirates had as much chance of beating the Orioles as Lichtenstein had of beating the Soviet Army.

Guess what? The Pirates lost the first two games, but came back to win the series. I was in the house for Game 7.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Dec '13

A good headline in Baltimore as that 71 series went to game seven ... Earl Weaver is down to his last 20-game winner.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Dec '13

I think Olympic hockey was always who can beat Canada. USA vs Soviet Union in the medal match was only four times.

My Dad used to take me to the track in Staten Island. All I remember was Midgets with Offernhouser engines. It was bus to the ferry and bus ride. While dating my wife we went to racing at Newark Bears stadium. Then the dirt track in Morristown. I can find no one that remembers it. I think it was in Florham Park really, on Rt 24. I went to the first and only NASCR race in Linden airport. Then got married had Kids and forgot racing. Then the Girls got interested so we jumped back in. We vacationed in Wallenpapack race week. Went for many years in the 60's to Pocono race. Then graduated to Daytona vacations for the 500 till the corporate take over and it was no fun anymore. Racers couldn't speak freely what's on there mind anymore. My one daughter went to 15 different tracks one year.
Look what my Dad started.

Old Gent,

The Morristown track sat on what is now Mennen & Mennen arena, the Dover track was replaced by Two Guys from Harrison, the midget track was in Pine Brook where Rt. 46 & Bloomfield Ave.meet. Mario Andretti raced at Pine Brook.

Really. My daughter lived in Morris Plains for 20 years. I asked all the natives around there and none of them knew anything about it.

Olympic hockey has typically been dominated by either Team Canada or the Soviets.

Canada won gold in 6 of the first 7 Olympiads, taking silver only once... to Great Britain, of all places, in 1936. The Soviets didn't have an ice hockey entrant until 1956.

In the next 10 Olympiads, the CCCP took gold 7 times with a silver in 1980 and bronze in 1960. The USA won gold each of the other two times. Directly after the fall of the Soviet Union, the "Unified Team" comprised of former Soviet Republics won gold in 1992. So that's 8 for the Russkies in a period where the Canucks could only manage four total medals: two silver and two bronze.

In the post-Soviet era, it's been more competitive. Two golds for Sweden, two for Canada, and one for the Czechs. The USA took silver to the Canadians gold both times.

A country that once was under Soviet domination that has done really well for itself in the Olympics is Lithuania basketball.

Andy Loigu Andy Loigu
Dec '13

Two former NFL players of Lithuanian descent are in the Hall of Fame ...

Johnny Unitas and Dick Butkus.

They may be the only two Lithuanian-Americans to ever play in the league where, as Mike Francesa says, "they play .... for pay."

Several Lithuanians have played in the NBA and on major college teams in hoops, but no Hall of Famers that I'm aware of yet. I'd research it, but I've got "real world" stuff to do ... don't you hate it when life gets in the way of sports? LOL

By the time I started watching baseball, the Whiz Kids had become the Was Kids.

When I started following the Orioles they had a young pitching rotation they called The Kiddie Corps. Guys like Palmer, McNally, and Bunker were not even in the majors yet. Their farm system was producing pitching prospect after pitching prospect.

My first Orioles heroes were Jim Gentile and Robin Roberts, who by then was a veteran they got off the scrap heap and he became a winner again. He mentored a 19-year old Palmer.

There was a growing feeling that the O's were going to do great things, and they did.

Now, it's all ancient history, but I'm happy for those years when it really was fun to be an Orioles fan.

Just a bit of history. Tim flock, Buck Baker & Lee Petty are some of the notables that raced there.

Re: What sport teams do you go for?

Dont forget Dover, N.J. speedway. It went out of business in the early 1950s. It was a dirt track. some of the early NASCAR greats raced there. Bill France Sr. ran there before he started NASCAR. There was also a dirt track in Harmony Twp. N.J.

We went there around 50 to 52. We drove out from Elizabeth NJ. My daughter left NJ for Ohio about 6 years ago. I will tell her about this info when they come for Christmas because she knows I asked everyone about it. I met Buck Baker once at Pocono. He sat in the stands with us during practice after his racing days. That picture of those cars brought back memories.

Here is another one. There is a shopping mall at that sight today. If you look around the property you can still see parts of the old track.
