Anyone missing their homing pigeon?
I have a very friendly homing pigeon making his
home on my deck today. He is definitely owned by someone
for he has green tags on both of his back legs and not afraid of humans. I think
he is lost and scared. I don't know what to do with him, but afraid to leave him overnight alone. I don't want to see him get hurt by cars or other animals. I have rescued
many animals, but never a bird. What should I do?
Any humane suggestions are welcome. Tx I attached a picture of him to this post.
If you put "pigeon" in the search box at the top of the forum, you will find previous threads with suggestions on what to do.
You could offer him some food, as he may just need a break/refueling stop on his way back home.
Even if he continues further on his journey, see if you can manage to get a hold of him long enough to read the code on the band. You can look it up and see where he's from.
Rebecka and GC tx for the advice. I gave him water and bread. Haven't seen him in the last half hour. Hopefully he is refueled and flew back to his owners :) If not GC I will definitely check out the codes on his tags(never knew about this) and will try to find his owners. Great advice from both of you. Thank you and greatly appreciated.
Jacqui, I had an injured one a few years ago that I managed to find the owner. The poor guy was on his way home from a pretty long trip. I guess he had been injured and just landed by me.
Long story short I managed to find his owner.
I think I started off my calling animal control. He gave me the number of someone who was able to get the info on the owner. I had to read him the numbers off the leg band of course.
Good luck.
From past experience, the owner 'usually ' will tell you that the pigeon just needs rest aND food. You did the right thing.
I believe homing pigeons get disoriented or "lost" at times give him a day or two and he should get his " bearings" back and return home.
I haven't seen him since I fed him. Praying he is ok especially with the storms tonight. I put out more bread for him. Never met a homing pigeon till today. What a beautiful bird.
We had a homing pigeon land on our deck when I was 10 years old, He stayed with us for 7 years until one day we woke up to realize he had disappeared. Not sure if he became cat/fox food or finally just took of on search of a new home but we never saw him again.

Jacqui,
You said he had tags on is back legs.
Does he have anything on his front legs?
Not good to feed birds bread, especially
white bread!
Cliff R! Read my first post! Tx! The one asking for help??? And it was wheat bread not white.
Jacqui
Sorry Jacqui, I never heard anyone refer to a birds legs as "back legs"
As far as feeding birds bread, here is some info.
I'll post the website later.
Are any human foods UNSAFE to feed birds?
Yes. Birds should not be offered many of the foods humans eat.
Bread (fresh or stale): provides no real nutritional value for birds; moldy bread can harm birds.
Chocolate: toxic to birds, just as it is to dogs and cats (it contains theobromine); never offer birds any foods containing chocolate.
Table scraps: some may not be safe or healthy for birds; most table scraps will attract mice or rats.
Jacqui,
This is the website I was referring to.

Kash farms on waters street trains pigeons. It may be from there. 908-852-0570 Try giving them a call. If you get the tag info they can look it up.
Is it about saving a domestic bird or all about you Cliff? Please stop the sarcasm! I merely asked for help to save a domestic bird and didn't expect such an attack. The pigeon returned. He is now safe living a life of luxury in my neighbors empty lavish chicken coop with proper food and water till we find his owner. Thank you all for your help! And for Cliff! The pigeon grew two front feet overnight and his tags said "Thanks for nothing Cliff"!
Thanks for caring for the pigeon, Jacqui. And thank you for the laugh. Your comment was great. :-)
