RIP Tom Petty
This day just keeps sucking worse and worse. What a tower of music. WXPN playing Petty all day. I'll be listening.
RIP
I see that he's on life support. Apparently the news of his death was premature? But it certainly looks to be close.
...but no brain activity. Just a matter of time.
Thank you, Tom. For everything.
Love his music so much. It's sad to think there might not be any more of it... Saw this on Twitter and thought it was very apropos. "Tom Petty was reported dead then not dead. Which makes sense because you can stand him up at the gates of hell but he won’t back down."
Just got a yahoo alert that he passed away at 8:35 pm.. and was surrounded by his family..
Sounded as if we had already lost him before the medics showed up at the house Sunday evening. It never sounded good right from the beginning.
Per his longtime manager, Petty was officially pronounced at 11:40EST Monday night. RIP Tom :-(

He will all ways be around as long as we hear his music it is a loss for many be at peace now Tom the line from the movie the post man rings in my head ( I have Heard of you your famous ) blessed be to all
Beyond it being a big loss for the rock community, those of us mainly over 40, these people dying around us is getting old. We lost a lot of the performers we grew up with, Petty, Bowie, Glen Frey, Lou Reed and a couple others over the past couple a years. Really makes you think about how the days truly are numbered and no one knows when the call will come for them.
With Tom gone now, beyond his awesome act with his backing band, the Heartbreakers (who I only saw one time, but what a great time it was, Tom and the Heartbreakers were Bob Dylan's backing band back in 1986 at MSG, and they got to do a set of their own music during Dylan's concert), now 3 of this "other band"- The Travelling Wilbury's are gone, RIP- Roy Orbison, George Harrison and now Tom Petty.
I remember the first time I saw him perform. Allentown Fair 1989. Still have the tee shirt, my niece wore to his concert at the PPL center 25 years later 2014. I loved his music and his acting in the Post Man. RIP
Tom's project as "Mudcrutch" which included some of the Heartbreakers managed to produce two great albums as well. "Scare Easy" is one of my favorite songs of the last decade.
I just listened to Miley Cyrus sing Wildflowers live on the Howard Stern show. It was phenomenal.
Nice tributes on the SNL open and FLA U stadium to Tom this weekend. Saw him twice, a shame....
Yes, an overdose of prescription meds he was taken for a broken hip, emphysema, and several other ailments.
I am sorry but accidental? Guy’s propped up on an opioid cocktail due to a fractured hip that’s getting worse to the point of breaking and its just an accident?
Somebody’s at fault here: dr’s, petty, those around him ——some or all of the above. Avoidable is a paper cut. This sounds more like liable.
Never saw him except as a Wilbury, wish I had.
Yeah, blame the Dr. makes sense.
Guy has a fractured hip and the doctor is not supposed to give him pain medicine.
Was it a pathologic fracture? If you don't know what that is look it up.
Pain medicine could be very necessary depending on many issues.
No information, pure speculation, especially when assigning blame.
No one blamed the dr.
I just said it sure looks like somebody's at fault. Maybe the dr is perfect; although that's some cocktail Petty had available to him. Just appears that there might be more than a "just an accident" here, not necessarily the dr.
This statement posted by Tom's family to his Facebook page on Jan 19:
"Our family sat together this morning with the Medical Examiner – Coroner’s office and we were informed of their final analysis that Tom Petty passed away due to an accidental drug overdose as a result of taking a variety of medications.
Unfortunately Tom’s body suffered from many serious ailments including emphysema, knee problems and most significantly a fractured hip.
Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury.
On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.
We knew before the report was shared with us that he was prescribed various pain medications for a multitude of issues including Fentanyl patches and we feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.
As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications.
On a positive note we now know for certain he went painlessly and beautifully exhausted after doing what he loved the most, for one last time, performing live with his unmatchable rock band for his loyal fans on the biggest tour of his 40 plus year career. He was extremely proud of that achievement in the days before he passed.
We continue to mourn with you and marvel at Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' incredible positive impact on music and the world. And we thank you all for your love and support over the last months.
Thank you also for respecting the memory of a man who was truly great during his time on this planet both publicly and privately.
We would be grateful if you could respect the privacy of the entire Heartbreaker family during this difficult time.
