I think it used to be Bank, then Newberry's, then Leeters,( or then Cohen's? )

Leeter's was down the street in building that was a bicycle store, vacant now. Bank was on the corner, now a micro-brewery.

Cool photos. I grew up in Essex County and we used to go to the Newberry's on Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove.

Remembering the old Newberry store very well. All of us new Mothers in Kenwood Village back in the early 60's used to push our babies in their strollers up a dirt road (now Mitchell Road) and into town to Newberry's...sit at the restaurant counter there and catch up on the news of the day plus do our shopping. Also remembering Leeter Inc. with fond memories...I worked there for many years as a sales associate until I opened my own business down the street.

Newberries had a lunch counter to the left when you went in. Great grilled cheese and you could get a sundae there, pick a balloon and pop it, and your sundae would cost the amount on the paper in the balloon, from 1c to 99c. The toys were downstairs, I remember that well!

@hktownie: I remember the toys being downstairs in Newberry's as well. My parents used to drive to Hackettstown at least once every couple of weeks and we always went to Newberry's to shop as my Mom loved that store. My daughter used to take her Pop Pop by the hand as soon as they entered the store and lead him downstairs to the toy department for the expected new toy.
