Identify a tree

My husband loves an ornamental tree that has a brilliant purple flower in spring. It is not very big but has a lot of 'punch'. Does anyone know what type of tree it is?

If it's small like bush size it may be a rhododendron - the colors can really stick out.

These days with black knot, the number of redbuds is dwindling. And what is left is so sick with few leaves on it you couldn't tell it was hardly alive let alone blooming.

Sounds like a rhodondendron. Mine last year was just beautiful but this year..now in bloom does not appear nearly as nice.

So glad this topic came up. I want this tree and bush/plant thing underneath. What is it?

Ps...sorry I can’t help with you finding your tree. As you can tell I know nothing about the outside world.

Crepe Myrtle is my guess. They are very popular here in SNJ.

The White Rhododendron seem to look good this year and are blooming now.

But azaleas and rhododendron do better south and in hill areas where it's not quite as cold as here and not as hot in Summer. The cold really seems to destroy them here
