Former location of Taste in Allamuchy (Old General Store) is going to be a diner. Saw a sign stating coming soon.
Went to breakfast there the other day with a friend and was very pleased. She had the eggs benedict and asked for them made a certain way and they made them perfect. I had the breakfast sandwich and their hash browns and that entree also was just right...Prices too not bad (and the prices were on the menu!)...We will definitely go back..
Trying to find out if they’re open tomorrow, July 4th but can’t find a phone number for them? Any ideas or if you’ve been recently, was there a sign up about the holiday.
I tried the Allamuchy Diner, based upon the good reviews here, and I was a former patron of the previous tenant, Taste. Let's just say, they have left the "Taste" with the former occupants.
We tried the breakfast menu. First thing I noticed walking in, they have jammed more tables in the dining area, making it hard to even get around as a customer. It looked as if the waitresses were having the same issue navigating the dining room.
The area where they serve the coffee from, against the back wall behind the register, lots of things on that counter that looked like a catch all for all kinds of things, food and non food and drink related. Disorganized and messy, which could lead to problems down the road.
The staff, while very young and hard working, was in desperate need of an experienced person to manage up front in the dining\register area. Again, the young ladies really were trying, but were literally bumping into each other and table customers were getting impatient trying to get their attention for refills and getting their checks.
One group of 4 people walked in and walked out after about waiting 5 minutes because they are not acknowledged or waited on, and that was with only about 3 tables being served, so they have some issues to work on. There were NOT a large amount of tables being served during our visit, and they had 3 waitresses working, so they should have not been as stretched for service as it appeared they were.
Prices were not anything special. $6 for an orange juice (albeit a larger cup) is a tad excessive. My coffee was pretty bad, the first cup tasted like a mix of coffee and tea together, the second cup was not much better, I left that half cup of tasteless coffee there when I left.
Food I will say was very average. We got a couple of omelets, nothing too special to prepare or cook. Perfunctory food, yes it was edible, but nothing I would say was the best in any class. The hash browns were dry and over cooked. The best part of the meal was the buttered rye bread- that should tell you enough.
That was $35 I wish I could have spent somewhere else for breakfast, but I am glad I tried it.... once.
I wish them luck. The interior, albeit way too cramped now (probably in an attempt to maximize customer volume), the service is way too disjointed and the prices are not good enough to want to give them another try.
Just another view point that differs from others who have enjoyed their visit. I won't be going back, but always hope a local business can improve and do well.
RhymeAnimal, Many of your points are correct. However, to paraphrase a well known restaurant critic - Never write a critique until the place has been open at least three months. Give them time to work out operational bugs.
I breakfasted there today with a party of six. Prices comparable to H'town Diner; Food better; the Breakfast Club sandwich really good. Yes, it was a bit cramped and service a tad slow. All six of us agreed it was worth going back.
Good point EVV, although, my experience mirrored R Animal"s almost in its entirety. The only way that place will be in business several months from now is if they either are reading this column or well meaning customers express their true feelings on the subject to the owner. My take: the back of the house is probably where the owner's expertise lies and he/they need someone with front of the house experience to help them out/train the staff. Other than that my sense is that the menu is overly ambitious for the number of seats in the place....i.e. trying to inventory the # of items needed to satisfy the # of menu items will kill them with costs. Better to focus on building breakfast and lunch biz until you have it down and you perceive a "demand" for dinner. Better to focus on the former and add a strong "take out" presence for dinner items from the drive home crowd.
Just saying that is...
thanks
EVV- whomever that critic was... is wrong...and I don't care who it was...
3 months? Horseshit.
If the shift manager isn't catching (and correcting) flaws on day 1, hour 1...then day 2, 3, 4, 5... they need to go.
Their hours of 6am-8pm 6 days a week is 84 hours in the first week alone.
3 months would be over 1,000 hours.
If you need 1,000 hours to get something right... you better be doing surgery.
New to this obviously knows this when he says- "front of the house experience to help them out/train the staff"
As I said in the other post about the old Charlie Browns...the owner leads the way- and the responsibility / cause / blame.
Staff did something wrong < manager < GM < owner.
If the owner of a restaurant doesn't catch the issues- they either need to walk the floor more...talk to the guests / watch reviews / forums... or get out of business.
And as an owner, if you HAVE to catch the problems... your GM / Mananger didn't do their job and needs to go.
Low level gets trained. Managers don't. Hire right or Fire right...away.
There is good reason all these places keep flipping management / names / style... and it's not lack of demand / customers.
It's lack of quality / attention to detail.
Have to love all these arm chair restaraunt owners who never ran one or owned one
They all seem to know what is wrong and how to fix it
Why don't you just buy the owner out and show us all how to do it right

Have to love when people like you comment like that when have no idea what our experience / knowledge is.
Why don't you explain how I was wrong?
Logic dictates you must have a reason, no?
Had lunch there today. Walked in a little after 11 & 4 people were hanging out behind the counter. There was 1 table not cleaned. We sat down & ordered coffee & iced tea. Coffee was brought out without any milk or spoon so we had to ask. We then placed our order - waitress did not know the menu - I ordered the greek salad & she had no idea what it was so I had to show her on the menu. I asked for no olives twice & she didn't seem to understand me but luckily it came out with no olives. Owner appears to be cooking as he came out once in an apron. We liked the food but there are definitely kinks to be worked out for sure. Coffee, Iced Tea, Chicken salad platter & Greek salad came to $33.00.
I have been to the diner several times now and wanted to share my favorites, I hope you share yours too so I can try something new!
French fries, are the best
Corn beef hash, cooked crisp
Feta cheese omelet, delish
Taylor ham, egg, cheese, hard roll, Jersey perfection
Potato skins had broccoli, very good!
Vegetable soup had cauliflower, very tasty!
Club sandwich with avocado was so good, portions all too big!
Chicken Francaise very lemony and too much!
Got the coffee hot and cold and like them both!
Okay - the DESSERT - homemade apple pie - actually bring them home! $10/small $18/large
And my personal favorite that you have to just try - Tres Leches!!!!
And no, I don’t work there but I do feel grateful that they are here in Allamuchy!
Greetings,,,

We had lunch about 2 weeks ago. Buffalo chicken wrap and egg salad. Very good foos, excellent service, really good prices.
Back now. Salad platter - chicken, tuna, and potato. We turned down Cole slaw. Not sure the potato was instead of.
Also got a Texas Dog. 8.99. Bacon, cheese, onion and fries. Not a huge dog, but for that price, it was terrific.
We willl be back and often.
I just hope they can out a covering over the front door to keep the very cold air from gushing in during the cold months.
